Get Ready for Mermaids and Werewolves!
'The Rising, Book One of the Painted Maidens Trilogy' will be released on November 8th.
It delves into a long-standing conflict between mermaids and werewolves, but the majority of the novel centers around mermaid life and society. Therefore most of my posts up until now have been all about mermaids. Want to know more? Be sure to check out my post on mermaid world-building here and also my mermaid Pinterest page here, but as a grateful guest of 'My Bookish Fairy Tale', I thought I'd go more into werewolves (I know they are Becca's fav)!
More of the werewolf culture I've developed will be revealed in the second book of the trilogy, due out in Spring of 2014. It'll be hard to give you the basics without ruining some of the twists in the first book, but I can let you in on a few secrets. The werewolves once served as protectors for the mermaids when they came ashore to mate and give birth. The relationship turned sour, and the werewolves revolted in a night that became known as the Maiden's Massacre.
Not all werewolves are bad, as our main character Serena comes to find out. She meets Liam, a werewolf who is just as interested as she is in reuniting the two species. We soon find out that the 'wolf' emerges during the full moon, only because that is when the mermaids do. The canine transformation occurs as an automatic response to heightened fear levels in the mermaids. So when our main character began sneaking ashore, she unwittingly provokes seemingly unnatural transformations. This sparked a chain of events resulting in all-out war between mermaid and werewolf.
I've done my fair share on researching the creatures of the moon by way of reading current
werewolf novels (my favorite part about the writing process is all the reading involved). One of my favorite I've run across is relatively unknown; 'Tamed' by Douglas R. Brown. here My all time favorite werewolf movie is 'An American Werewolf in Paris' IMBD, not to mention True Blood (Joe Manganiello – hottest werewolf, ever). But by far my favorite transformation (something I'll have to delve into in the second book), is in the new TV series, Hemlock Grove YouTube (and the series is totally not appropriate for young adults, by the way).
I definitely want to know your favorite aspects of werewolves, and your favorite movies and shows with them. Please comment below and don't forget to enter the contest for a free Kindle Paperwhite!
And don't forget to check out her Akasha series as well.
