Review: Onyx ( Lux 2) by Jennifer L Armentrout

Onyx (Lux, #2)
Release Date: August 14 2012
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Format: Paperback
Pages:448
Genre: YA/Fiction/Sci-Fi
Series: Lux (#2)
Source: Purchased

Goodreads Synopsis:
Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…

Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.

Something worse than the Arum has come to town…

The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we're linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there's this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that's possible. Against all common sense, I'm falling for Daemon. Hard.

But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies…

My Thoughts:
LOVED IT LOVED IT LOVED IT!! Is it even possible for Jennifer to write a bad book? Because I honestly don't think so. I am a huge fan and Jennifer delivers a heart pounding, action packed, swoon worthy read that will leave you breathless.

I am not the biggest fan of aliens but there are a few authors who can make it work for me and Jennifer is one of them. Onyx was more emotional for me than Obsidian was. Katy goes through more of an emotional rollercoaster in Onyx. I did curse Jennifer at one point in the book only because Katy needs as many allies as possible and I felt even worse for Dee.

I am a big fan of the push and pull attraction with romances' and there is a ton of that between Daemon and Katy. Oh Daemon where the heck do I start? He has easily placed himself in the top 5 of my book boyfriends. I love the bad boys but who deep down inside are emotionally twisted and have a heart of gold and he has all of that.

The plot builds up and explodes in book 2. There were times when I wanted to smack Katy and I was thinking "why the hell can't you just listen to Daemon" But where would the fun be if she did?

Onyx leaves an incredible opening for Opal and I am so freaking excited to see where Jennifer takes the story. I really love Jennifer's character development. She takes risks with them but they always learn and grow as the story goes on. I love that they are unexpected.

Jennifer has never disappointed me with any of her stories and Onyx is no exception! A great story, a wonderful romance and tons of action and drama to leave you begging for more.

Author Interview with Katie McGarry

Katie McGarryFirst off I want to thank Katie for taking the time out of her hectic schedule to answer some questions for us today. As you all know I am such a HUGE fan of Pushing The Limits and I knew that I needed to pick Katie's brain.

Where did your inspiration for PTL come from?

I was actually writing another book when I stumbled across the voice of Echo. When my character broke out into “How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood” then later wished she would spontaneously combust, I knew I had found someone new…someone whose wit made me laugh, but whose hurt made me ache.

I write love stories so I free wrote for awhile in order to find the perfect guy for Echo—that one person who could help her with her pain. This person was Noah.

How many drafts did you go through before it became just right?

I typically have two to three drafts of a novel before I consider it done, but…I continually go through the draft and make changes as I write so it is continually evolving.

Are the character's based on anyone or purely fictional?

My characters aren’t based on anyone I know. Instead of basing my characters off of someone, I put a piece of myself, no matter how small, into each of my characters. Echo has my sarcasm, Beth encompasses my fears, Isaiah and Lila share my loyalty, and Noah has my passion to love.

Echo and Noah come from extremely different backgrounds. Did you always have this in mind?

Yes. I wanted to write characters who were, on paper, opposites of each other, but faced very similar emotional problems.

The chemistry between Noah and Echo is incredible. How were you able to balance it so well without going over the top?

Thank you! I think the best answer to this is my constant rereading of scenes. I write what I like to read and then as I reread what I wrote, I change things if I feel like something is too much or causes me to roll my eyes. I want to have butterflies when I read. Even if I’m the person who wrote the scene.

When did you realize that you wanted to become a full time author?

Writing chose me. I’m a stay at home mom of three very active children and writing is my passion. I’m very blessed to have the opportunity to publish my stories. At heart, I still consider myself a full time mom. J

Did you ever expect PTL to have as much success as it has had?

No. Most days I have to pinch myself so I know I’m not dreaming.

Are you interested in writing any other genre besides contemporary?

Contemporary is my first love! Maybe someday I’ll write something else, but for now I’m sticking with contemp.

Beth was given a great opening in PTL. Did you always know that you would write a story just for her?

I knew I would write Beth’s story when Noah walked into the house and found her bruised and bleeding at the kitchen table. My heart broke for her in that moment and I knew I had to get her story down on paper as soon as I could.

Dare You To (Pushing the Limits, #2)

Thankfully, my readers don’t have to wait too long to read Beth’s story. Dare You To is scheduled to be released on May 28, 2013.

Guest Post Author Pip Harry 5 Things I Learnt Being a Debut Author in 2012

Pip Harry
Pip Harry published her first book – the YA coming of age novel, I’ll Tell You Mine, in April, 2012 (In August it was released as an ebook worldwide) it’s available on Amazon, Kobo and fishpond. She’s pretty sure there are still plenty of copies available.

5 things I learnt being debut author in 2012

1.       Other YA authors would become my friends

There’s refreshingly little competitiveness in the YA world and in my first year of being published I discovered a warm and welcoming community of awesome young adult writers all over the world. Melina Marchetta (Quintana of Charyn, On the Jellicoe Road) blurbed my book and launched it at a bookstore with the sweetest speech ever. Margo Lanagan (The Brides of Rollrock Island) invited me to share curries with other lady authors so famous I would frequently choke on my naan bread when they revealed their names. Stateside, Julie Cross (Tempest, Vortex) let me in on her gang of teen authors: Team Teen Author and I found myself involved in international dare days with other YA writer's involving peanut butter facials and writing group posts about bullying and how to be a writer.

2.       Book bloggers would be more important than traditional press to spread the word

My book sailed under the radar of virtually every big name newspaper and magazine (despite me having worked  as a journalist for nearly 15 years and begging every former editor to give me a review) and it was the book bloggers who really came to the party to help tell the world I’ll Tell You Mine was out there. Vegan YA Nerds, Cuddlebuggery, Alpha Reader, Lizabelle, Winterhaven Books, Distraction99, Rather Be Reading…they shared the book, sang its praises, staged giveaways and posted insightful reviews on Goodreads that made me weep with happiness. They GOT it.  I loved their funny memes and in-jokes and was even okay when some of them didn’t like the book and said so. Some of those bloggers I now count as friends.

3.       I would re-connect with my past

When you write a book – especially one that’s set in high school - it blows the cover off your privacy and anonymity. Out of the woodwork came dozens of people from my past life saying they had read the book. Old school mates wrote to me on Facebook and invited me to speak at their book clubs, former workmates tweeted the cover, family friends wrote ‘fan’ letters and called my Mum, overseas friends went out of their way to find the book (even in NYC or London) and send congratulations. My Italian cover model (who had never read an English book) made a huge effort to read it and sent a note via twitter. It was an overwhelming and glorious love-in and a great way to re-ignite friendships that had lost their way over time and make new ones.

4.       I would still doubt myself

In my first year out I got mostly good reviews (whew) and even a grant, but the writer angst remained. Will anyone want to read my second book? Is this all just a wonderful fluke? Who do I think I am anyway? An author?  It turns out being published doesn’t make the ideas flow easier or the writing turn out more polished. It doesn’t give you bullet proof confidence either. I’m still back at the computer, hacking away like I did as a non-published scribe.

5.       I wouldn’t be a big success

Every debut author dreams of lightening in a bottle success. The tipping point. The buzz that can’t be stopped. The sort of thing that has recently happened with Gone Girl, Fifty Shades, Wild, Easy…thousands of sales and an Amazon rank in single digits. In reality, very few debut authors enjoy that sort of big scale success – particularly on their first hit out. When my friends ask me how many books I’ve sold, I shrug and ask them to pick a number between 100 and 5,000. Because I don’t actually know.  I figure if it was a big hit, we’d be re-printing by now and fielding offers from dozens of international publishers. I won’t lie – I’d love that sort of validation. But the real success for me this year was making contact with my teen audience, writing something they found real and important and sharing the work I’d kept hidden for so long. All those things make me as lucky as JK or Stephenie. Though not as able to buy a ski chalet in Whistler.

Review: Breathe by Sarah Crossan

Breathe (Breathe, #1)
Release Date: October 2 2012
Publisher: Greenwillow
Format: Hardcover
Pages: 373
Genre: YA/Dystopian
Series: Breathe (#1)
Source: Purchased

Goodreads Synopsis:

nhale. Exhale.
Breathe.
Breathe.
Breathe . . .
The world is dead.
The survivors live under the protection of Breathe, the corporation that found a way to manufacture oxygen-rich air.

Alina
has been stealing for a long time. She's a little jittery, but not terrified. All she knows is that she's never been caught before. If she's careful, it'll be easy. If she's careful.

Quinn
should be worried about Alina and a bit afraid for himself, too, but even though this is dangerous, it's also the most interesting thing to happen to him in ages. It isn't every day that the girl of your dreams asks you to rescue her.

Bea
wants to tell him that none of this is fair; they'd planned a trip together, the two of them, and she'd hoped he'd discover her out here, not another girl.

And as they walk into the Outlands with two days' worth of oxygen in their tanks, everything they believe will be shattered. Will they be able to make it back? Will they want to

My Thoughts:

I really loved Breathe. This was such a great dystopian concept. Breathe was such a fast paced read and I loved every second of it.

I really enjoy books that are written in different POV's. Breathe is written from three POV's. Bea, Alina and Quinn all come from extremely different backgrounds and it gives the story great depth to feature what it is like for the three different classes in this book.

Bea is an Auxillery and she has struggled her entire life. Living off very little oxygen has made it extremely hard for her parents survival. Bea wants nothing more than give them a better life.

Quinn is a Premium and he has been given the best life. Premiums are the rich and they can afford to have as much oxygen as they want. Quinn isn't like most Premiums. He doesn't think he is better than anyone but he is still naive in his thinking that the POD is the best way of life.

Alina is part of the Resistance. A group of people who know that they can restore Earth to it's once beautiful glory. They know that there is a better way of life. And they will stop at nothing to achieve their goals and stop Breathe.

I loved this book. Every single part of it. The characters are believable and dynamic. There are so many twists and turns that it keeps you on your toes. There is romance, action, suspence and so much drama. What more could you want?
