Cover Reveal While He Was Away by Karen Schreck & Guest Post

While He Was Away Walmart-Exclusive Cover Reveal
and How Inspiration Can Come From Anywhere:
Even a Trip to the Grocery Store and a Handful of Long-Lost Photographs
By Karen Schreck

I sometimes wonder what my mother would say if she knew that her story—one of the saddest, sweetest love stories I’ve ever heard—was retold in a new way in my young adult novel, While He Was Away.

Now Sourcebooks Fire is sharing the story yet again, in a second, exclusive edition, released nation-wide at Walmart.  The fact that Sourcebooks believed enough in While He Was Away to bring it to life the first time felt like a much-needed confirmation of years of hard work.  The fact that they are standing behind my book again in this way . . . well, it feels like a miracle.  I’m truly grateful.

I wonder what my mother would say to this incredible news? I like to think she would be grateful too.  I like to think she would be happy.  She wanted her story heard after all.  So much so that it was one of the last things she told me, just before she died.

One rainy night when I was fourteen, right before cancer left her to ill to talk, let alone drive a car, my mother said, “Come with me.  We’re going shopping.”  We drove to the little local market and wandered up and down the aisles, as she threw in a can of tuna, some dishwashing soap, and other little things we didn’t need.  We paid for these little things.  She looked anxious and tired, still she hadn’t said a thing; we hadn’t spoken a word.

It was only when we were parked in our driveway again that my mother said, “I was married once before when I was very young.  He died a hero in WWII.”And that was that.  Soon after, she died.
I thought about my mother’s mysterious love story for many years.  I talked to relatives, found long-lost photographs.  The story took seed in me.  It flowered into a novel about a young women whose boyfriend leaves for the Iraq War.  In her loneliness, she seeks out a grandmother she’s never met, whose first husband died in WWII.  She seeks out a character inspired by mother.

A late night drive, a few words spoken in the dark.  Even things as simple as this can inspire a novel.

Author Interview: Marissa Meyer

Marissa Meyer
Marissa Meyer is the New York Times Bestselling author of the Lunar Chronicles series. Cinder (#1) and Scarlet (#2)
Thank you Marissa for taking the time to answer some questions for us.

Since Scarlet is due to release next month which book did you have more fun writing?

This is tough, because there are parts of both books that were a lot of fun to write, and other parts that were a struggle. But in general I'd say I had more fun with SCARLET, because it has more characters in it (Scarlet, Wolf, and Captain Thorne, in addition to Cinder, Kai, and the rest), and I really love seeing them all play off each other in entertaining ways. Plus, because there are two dueling plots throughout most of the book, when I got stuck on one, I could just switch to the other!

So far there are 4 books in the series. How many books do you plan on writing for the lunar chorincles series?
The series will end after four books, but I've also written a couple short prequel stories (titled "Glitches" and "The Queen's Army") that are available for e-reader downloads, and I would love to write more. In particular, I have an idea for a prequel novelette surrounding the evil queen that I'd really love to write someday.

Author Guest Post: Faith McKay Prophecy Girl

Lacuna Valley: A Sort of Made Up Place

Lacuna Valley, the setting for Prophecy Girl and the Lacuna Valley series, is a fictional place. Sort of.

I once lived in a place where the wind barely ever blew. It was haunting, the stillness. In the spring there were flowers and bees everywhere, and the place just came alive. In the summer golden fields covered slopes that built up to the rolling hills the surrounded everything. In the fall, brilliant leaves lit up the valley, and there was an audible sigh as the air cooled down.

When winter finally came around the snow covered everything, making the still quiet even heavier, and deer wandered between the bare trees. The seasons were so defined. When I wasn't noticing the scenery, I was struck with how strange the place was. It was extremely isolated and that isolation created a microcosm. Everyone seemed to feel that we were far away from the rest of the world, and we were really.

So it wasn't a big surprise when I started writing scenes and I knew right away what the setting was. The very first scene I wrote took place on a bridge, and I can tell you exactly where that bridge is. The next scene I wrote involved a sign that reads "Next Services: 74 Miles".

I used to have a picture of that sign hanging up on my wall, as a reminder of that very strange and isolated place.I gave my Lacuna Valley a new name. This let my imagination manipulate things and run wild, but most of the details mentioned throughout Prophecy Girl are all places I have photographs of. There really is a tourist town with a western theme, there really was an eerie stillness to the place, and there really was a No Hunting sign in front of the high school.

While I can't prove that there is a magical force that makes the people of the valley have an earthy disposition, if you went there, you'd have to question whether that might be true as well.

It's an interesting thing, to create a world that you can bring a reader into. As a bit of a traveler, I'm always trying to get people to visit different places, and I feel like in Prophecy Girl I've tried to make that a little bit of an easier trip—no airfare required.

Prophecy Girl: Find on Goodreads

Ever since Samantha Winthrop's mother moved them to Lacuna Valley, supposedly in search of better weather, the list of strange questions she has no answers for has been growing out of control.

Does her little sister, Violet, have the ability to make things happen just by "praying" for them? Are Sam's dreams really predicting the future? Is she destined to marry the boy she just met, and what is the mysterious orb that he's guarding? Why does she get the impression that there are dangerous creatures watching from the woods?

While Sam should be focusing on answering those questions, there is one other that makes them seem almost irrelevant: Is her mother planning on killing her and Violet?

About Faith:

I write stories about characters with real world struggles in otherworldly settings.
Before I knew how to form letters on the page, I scribbled lines that looked like writing on page after page, bound them together, and handed them to people. I think that most writers tend to have a moment from their younger years they look back on and think, aha! it was destiny, and this is the earliest of mine.
I wrote a book with characters that struggle with the idea of having a destiny called PROPHECY GIRL. In comparison, I really lucked out that my destiny was to struggle with comma placement and be that awkward lady who points out puns at parties.

Bout of Books 6.0 Read-a-Thon Wrap Up

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon

So I have officially survived my first read-a-thon. It was definitely a lot more difficult to reach my goals than I had imagined them to be. Life of course got in the way but I really enjoyed it and I had a lot of fun pushing myself. I did not reach my goal of 10 books nor did I participate in any challenges and I caught the tail end of one twitter conversation.

I read 7 out of the 10 that I had originally picked out. So I guess that's not too bad and I had tons of fun.
The books that I managed to finish were.

Intertwined by Gena Showalter
Immortal Beloved Cate Tiernan
I'll Tell You Mine by Pip Harry
Incarnate by Jodi Medows
Rift by Andrea Cremer
Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce
Spellbound by Cara Lynn Shultz

All in all I am proud of myself to accomplished this much. At least I know to set a more realistic goal for next time.

The Cost and Value of Book Blogging Survey

   book blogging

I came across this great survey this morning from Wendy over at The Midnight Garden. And I think that any who runs a blog should definitely check it out and fill out the survey. It is extremely eye opening and I am looking forward to seeing what the results are. The more blogger's that fill out this survey, the better the results will be.

So if you have 10 minutes to spare please check this out and fill it out. The Midnight Garden Survey The survey closes January 20th.

New posting on the blog ( maybe?)

Hey guy's so I have been struggling with my "identity" for a while now as you all know. I guarantee you have come to the blog and the design has been one way and then come back the next day for it to be totally different! I know I can't help it. But as for design why's I like how things are right now but what I am currently struggling with now is whether or not to write about the Adult books I love. Mainly paranormal romance which due to it's content is not suitable for a younger audience.

I adore YA and My Bookish Fairy Tale will continue to be mainly a YA based blog but what I want to do is a weekly My Bookish Fairy Tale After Hours post. The part I am struggling with is do I just create a page solely for this purpose or should I just create a new blog for the adult content? Then again I already spend so much time dedicted to this page that I don't think I can run two blogs without one of them failing or at least not getting as much time as it would deserve. I do not want to run the risk of offending any of my current readers and I do not want to place a 18+ content warning either because I am afraid it will scare away those YA readers.

So what do you think? Would you be comfortable with a My Bookish Fairy Tale After Hours page? Or should I just continue to leave these reviews to Goodreads?

As always your input is extremely valuable to me and I would appreciate any feedback you guys may have
